This Week at The 316 Church
Date: January 18, 2026
Speaker: Pastor Jason Reynolds
Message Title: Shared Image, Shared Calling, Shared Ministry: A Theology on the roles of men and women in the church.
Scripture Focus: Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 2:18, 21, Joel 2:28-29, Acts 2:16-19, 1 Timothy 2:11-15
Message Summary: At the heart of this message lies a powerful exploration of God's original design for humanity - one of partnership, mutuality, and shared purpose. Beginning in Genesis 1 and 2, we discover that when God said 'Let us make humanity in our image,' He was establishing a pattern of cooperative unity that reflects the very nature of the Trinity. The Hebrew word 'ezer' - often translated as 'helper' - is the same word used to describe God Himself as our protector and deliverer, revealing that women were created not as subordinates but as allies standing side by side with men. This foundational truth is then prophetically proclaimed through Joel's declaration that God would pour out His Spirit on 'all flesh' - sons and daughters, young and old, servants and free - a promise dramatically fulfilled at Pentecost when 120 believers, both men and women, received the Holy Spirit and spoke the gospel in languages they didn't know. The result? Three thousand souls saved because everyone spoke together. When we understand controversial passages like 1 Timothy 2 in their proper historical context - addressing specific issues in Ephesian churches influenced by Artemis worship - we see Paul wasn't silencing women universally but correcting false teachings and inviting women into the same path of learning and ministry as men. This isn't about convenience or cultural accommodation; it's about being faithful to the entire narrative of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, where women consistently lead, prophesy, teach, and proclaim the gospel alongside men as equal image-bearers of God.
